Dark City – Halloween Horror Month Movie Spectacular 2013 Day 12

Dark City
Dark City is easily one of my favourite movies. It’s one of those I have watched over and over, although it’s been a few years. Long enough that although this was the first time I saw the director’s cut, I couldn’t tell you what was different. What was still there was the nightmarish feeling that makes me include this as a horror movie, although it might be closer to science fiction. This is a movie that, if you told me at the end that it was all a dream, I’d go “all right, that makes sense”. Because that is the feeling I get from Dark City; that someone took a disturbing dream and made it just coherent enough to make sense.

Dark City looks dark and beautiful, and it’s driven by ideas to match the look. It explores similar themes to The Matrix, only far better and a year before The Matrix was released. Themes of what makes a human, of memory and the “soul”. And somehow manages to do that without becoming too pretentious. The story is driven forward by a mystery, by the main character trying to figure out who he is and what is happening to him while being pursued by Strangers that don’t appear quite human. To say that Dark City is well acted is almost an understatement. Frankly, I couldn’t tell you a single thing I dislike about this movie.

About Ted Dahlberg

I'm a stoic, a pessimist, a bookworm, a skeptic, and possibly other things which take more than one word to say.
