Monsters – Halloween Horror Month Movie Spectacular 2014 Day 10

There’s a lot to like about Monsters, and I wish I enjoyed it more than I do. Not really a horror movie, it’s a story about two people trying to cross a US/Mexico border where alien organisms have spread. Seasonal migration of the huge adult creatures regularly threaten property and lives. The world building of the movie is excellent. Huge, tentacled aliens are roaming the Earth, and it all seems very plausible. The movie gives enough details to let you know what is going on and to give the story flavour, but it doesn’t get bogged down in unnecessary details or technobabble that would threaten the suspension of disbelief. And I love the design of the aliens.

However, all that is background to the story of two Americans who are trying to get back home from Mexico just as the aliens are becoming more active. An excellent premise, but unfortunately I find it difficult to care very much about the characters. The man comes off as slightly unlikeable and selfish to begin with, whereas the woman seems nice enough and that’s about it. You get to learn a bit more about the characters and find out that there’s more to them than might have been apparent at first, but there’s nothing terribly surprising there.

I like the idea of a quiet, human story set against a fantastic background. I jsut don’t like this particular human story very much. The movie’s certainly worth watching once, but I doubt that I will ever go back to it.

About Ted Dahlberg

I'm a stoic, a pessimist, a bookworm, a skeptic, and possibly other things which take more than one word to say.
